Introduction:

This workshop provides an important avenue for knowledge translation and application of previous work to Tuberculosis infection control in Canada, with focus on the Canadian populations most affected by this disease (e.g., Aboriginal, foreign born, homeless). This workshop provides a national forum to discuss and formalize priorities for research activities, and strengthen national collaborative efforts. The workshop will address the effects of detection, vaccination and treatment, education and compliance strategies; the effects of TB and health policies in the affected communities and their associated costs; and the role of mathematical modelling in advancing TB control in Canada. To address these issues, this event will bring together Canadian public health professionals and planners, key decision makers involved in public health and representatives from those populations most affected by this disease, researchers in public health and medicine, social science, and infectious disease modellers.

Principal Objectives:

1. Evaluate the success of current TB health policies and control strategies in Canada on the national level and for specific population groups.

2. Determine the impact of detection, intervention, compliance, and education strategies in terms of TB incidence and prevalence.

3. Identify key characteristics of the TB epidemics that impact the success of TB health policies and control strategies and therefore constitute targets for future interventions.

4. Leverage existing ties to establish further links with public health decision makers, Aboriginal health organizations, health organizations serving the homeless,; and develop a research community to foster national collaborative efforts.
